Hyaluronic Acid for Skin Health: Science That Truly Works

Hyaluronic acid is a natural, biologically active compound that fills the extracellular matrix in the human body and plays a key role in maintaining skin hydration, elasticity, and firmness. It supports skin structure regeneration and wound healing, participates in regulating inflammation, and even contributes to cell-to-cell communication.

From a chemical perspective, hyaluronic acid is a linear polysaccharide found not only in the skin but also in joints, eyes, and connective tissue. However, more than 50% of the body’s total hyaluronic acid is located in the skin.

One of its most remarkable properties is its ability to bind water—up to 1000 times its own weight. This makes hyaluronic acid one of the most effective moisturizers known and widely used in dermatology.

However, as we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin naturally decreases. This decline is believed to begin as early as around age 25. Signs of reduced hyaluronic acid levels include:

  • drier skin

  • decreased moisture retention

  • loss of elasticity

  • formation of wrinkles

In addition, environmental UV radiation not only damages skin collagen but also reduces hyaluronic acid synthesis and increases the activity of enzymes called hyaluronidases, which break it down. Studies have shown that UVB exposure increases the amount of low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid fragments in the dermis, promoting inflammation and accelerating skin aging.

Interestingly, in photoaging, hyaluronic acid levels in the epidermis may temporarily increase, while decreasing in the dermis. This imbalance contributes to structural changes in the skin and deepening of wrinkles.


Topical Hyaluronic Acid: Does It Really Work?

Yes—its effectiveness is supported by multiple clinical studies.

  • Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates deeper layers
    Hyaluronic acid in the 20–300 kDa range can pass through the stratum corneum and reach deeper epidermal layers, improving elasticity and reducing wrinkle depth.

  • High molecular weight hyaluronic acid forms a protective barrier
    It reduces transepidermal water loss, improves surface hydration, and soothes irritation.

  • Very low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (<10 kDa)
    Penetrates into the dermis and stimulates collagen synthesis.

  • Combination with aesthetic procedures
    Hyaluronic acid serums can:

    • enhance the results of botulinum toxin injections and prolong their effects

    • accelerate skin recovery after laser treatments

    • reduce inflammation following chemical peels and microneedling


Hyaluronic acid is not just a “moisture-binding” ingredient. It is an active signaling molecule that interacts with specific receptors to stimulate collagen production, support the skin barrier, and regulate local immune responses. Together, these effects contribute to healthier, firmer, and more resilient skin.
